Know Your Past….Know Thyself

I can honestly say I have never had a real hobby. Mostly because I’ve always seen it as a “time issue” and never having much of it to dedicate to a specific thing other than my regular duties of work, home and family. Something happens, though, when you hit midlife. In my case, I’ve developed a deep desire, and I guess you can call it a hobby, for knowing more about my family roots and ancestral home. So I’ve embarked on a pursuit that will take me on a journey to my family’s homeland, Austria and Hungary.

My father always had a deep passion for history, especially for our family’s homeland and the many complexities of that region, the war, and my immigrant grandparent’s move to America. Unfortunately, I was too young to fully absorb any of the complex details, so now I find myself reconstructing history.

With the help of my new friends, Genealogists Gary Gabrich and Dennis Cronin, and my father’s younger sister, Rose Wallisch, I’m slowly putting the pieces of the puzzle together that make up my family tree as I prepare for the trip of my lifetime and discovery of learning my family’s past and why I am who I am. I invite you to follow me on this journey of retracing my family roots and exploration of the spaces of my family’s homeland by visiting my blog at www.lifeandspaces.com. You may also discover a new inner passion to truly “know thyself”.
