Life+Spaces Editor’s Picks Best of the Home Shows

By+Jessica Benko

Each home is stunning and unique, yet functional and built with today’s savvy homeowner in mind.

The Elkhart County Builders Association and the Home Builders Association of St. Joseph Valley have the opportunity to present their most innovative ideas and exciting designs during the exclusive Parade of Homes Plus and Builders Showcase every year. This year, The Parade of Homes took place June 20 – 28, while the Builders Showcase took place on two consecutive weekends in May, beginning May 9 -10.

Life & Spaces selected a favorite from each show , the Parade of Homes Plus, sponsored by the Elkhart County Builders Association, and the Builders Showcase, presented by the Home Builders Association of St. Joseph Valley. Jeremy’s Construction and Nugent Builders, Inc. were selected as our top picks. The two homes were chosen based on criteria that most concerns our readers and home buyers today: price and value, curb appeal, “livability” and the appeal to a variety of age groups. While each home is distinctive in design and boasts its own special features, our Editors felt that “both homes were built with the homeowner’s future needs in mind, had a ‘wow’ curb appeal, and really made new guests feel as if they were already at home”.

Jeremy’s Construction

Jeremy’s Construction, our favorite Parade of Homes Plus pick, is based in Middlebury and builds 100% custom homes. Their emphasis on quality and functionality has set them apart from other local builders, regardless of the client’s budget (they have built homes ranging from $200,000 to $2 million). Don and Patti Weirich, the new homeowners, are ecstatic about their upcoming move and enjoyed the entire building process saying, “Jeremy [Gingerich] is conscientious, easy to work with, and helped us make good decisions for our home…the expectations of quality that Jeremy has for both himself and his
sub-contractors really differentiates him from others”.
As is evident with this home, Jeremy’s Construction is meticulous throughout the building process in order to create a practical area that flows well and utilizes all of the space available. They also integrate geo-thermal systems, water on-demand systems, and other ‘green’ products into 95% of their homes. Kent Hostetler, with Crystal Valley Heating and Air Conditioning, said that, “…the geothermal system uses the largest renewable resources to heat the home, which will save the homeowners approximately $1,500 a year”. While Jeremy’s Construction brings “the scheme of things together”, Jeremy notes that they are only able to do so with their strong set of sub-contractors. When he isn’t working in a management capacity, Jeremy can be found on each job site, almost everyday, helping with whatever work needs to be completed. His hands-on approach keeps homeowners at ease and only goes to show that Jeremy’s Construction genuinely cares for each of their clients.

Home Builder’s Association of St. Joseph Valley
Nugent Builders

Our top pick of the Builders Showcase, sponsored by the Home Builders Association of St. Joseph Valley, was built by Nugent Builders, Inc. This house, located in the Bradford Shores neighborhood, has been their most popular design yet. Offering an open concept floor plan, large walk-in pantry and convenient mudroom and laundry storage area (complete with an iPod and cell phone charging station!), it is no wonder that the house sold shortly after the Builders Showcase. The new homeowners were confident that this house and its builders were a perfect fit for what they were looking for, “The biggest thing is working with the builders. We felt very comfortable with them. They are good, friendly people and were very helpful during this process.” Don Nugent, Construction Supervisor, is on the job site everyday to ensure that each project runs as smoothly as this one.

Just as appealing to the new homeowners is the versatile 2000+ square foot lower level that is ideal for entertaining family and friends. Nugent Builders worked with Allegro to integrate top of the line technology products into almost every room of the home. The catch? Every piece of technology is hidden, including a 52” HD TV and 100” projection screen, to ensure nothing takes away from the home’s unique features and beautiful décor. Linda Rogers also attributes the home’s success at the Builders Showcase to Imperial Furniture, Tammy Keller Interiors, Pool Tables Plus, Direct Rug Imports and Spalding Design Group (who actually designed the home). Nugent Builders, Inc. is an Energy Star partner and exceeds most of the strict standards that have been set by the EPA for new home construction. With the support of their sub-contractors, Nugent Builders continues to build homes that not only accommodate the short term needs for all types of families, but they also plan for the needs that are 10 years down the road. The result of these thoroughly thought-out designs and collaborative efforts are, quite simply, very happy homeowners.
