life+spaces Golf Guide 2013

By+Tony Polizzotto

The winter of 2012-2013 had golfers out on the course until just before the holidays – and we don’t mean Thanksgiving! Fortunately, that doesn’t leave too many calendar days before the opening of a favorite club or course for the 2013 season.

In the following pages, you will find our third annual golf guide to public and private facilities in Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan. Getting away from your home course and exploring the wide variety of options is a highlight of the warm weather months in Michiana. Also, with the economy remaining somewhat volatile, country club memberships remain a very good value. The same is true with the daily fees on public courses where enticing specials are offered throughout the year. Also, don’t be afraid to call some of the private courses in our area, especially for groups of 12 or more. For those who want to play mid-week, some private facilities are more than happy to accommodate groups.  Just as a tip, have the golf pro make the call to facilitate tee times.

So enjoy the 2013 golf guide. It won’t be long before your clubs will see some use.

WARREN GOLF COURSE

The Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame was designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, arguably the greatest golf course architects of the day. They said “We wanted an old-fashioned, traditional course. One based on subtleties, not special effects.” They accomplished just that. This classic design features square tee boxes, small, undulating push-up greens and strategic bunkering that gives one the feeling that they stepped back in time to the early 20th century. Since its opening in 1999, the Warren Golf Course has been host to 17 high profile USGA, NCAA and Western Golf Association tournaments, including the 2010 Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship. The 250 acre venue is also a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.

Of the 18 courses that Coore & Crenshaw have designed, Warren Golf Course is one of only six public access courses in the country. An average green fee for playing a Coore & Crenshaw course is $175, while you can play the Warren Golf Course for as little as a quarter of that price.

Come experience a public facility that rivals even the best private courses in the region. Just give us a call or reserve your tee time on-line and you will be on your way to playing a course that has been praised by professionals and amateurs alike. Darius Oliver, the world’s leading authority on golf course design who visited The Warren Golf Course last May, wrote in his bestselling book, Planet Golf USA, that no matter which Coore & Crenshaw course you’re playing at, you know it will be guaranteed to have “strategy, interest and innate beauty.”
