A New Way to Give

By+Kelli Stopczynski

As the saying goes, ‘tis the season for giving. It seems like lots of organizations are asking for our support these days, and it’s often tough to track exactly where our money is going or how it’s being spent. But did you know there’s a national, web-based, non-profit organization that allows anyone to donate to a school or classroom of their choice?

DonorsChoose.org is an online charity set up for teachers in every corner of the country to create a “wish list” of sorts online – requests range from pencils for a poetry writing unit, to violins for a school recital, to microscope slides for a biology class. Donors (like you!) can log on to the website, browse the various projects and make a donation toward any project they wish to help fund. Once the financial goal is reached, DonorsChoose.org delivers the materials to the class and students begin using them. You’ll even receive a thank-you note, photographs of students using their new materials and a cost report of how each dollar was spent.

Perhaps the best part about the charity is allowing donors to give toward a cause near and dear to their hearts. Are you a science buff? You can search for science wish lists in your own town!  Is music in your blood? It takes less than 5 minutes to locate a local school in need of recorders, instruments or sheet music and donate to the cause. You can give anywhere from $1 to $1,000,000… there truly is no limit.

The Woodwind & Brasswind is one local company already supporting the music side of DonorsChoose.org

“Together, we’ve helped provide nearly $1.6 million in musical instruments to projects reaching over 100,000 students in low-income area public schools across the country,” said Jenna Grisham, Institutional Marketing Manager for the Woodwind & Brasswind.  “The students are so excited to be given the opportunity to learn and enjoy music – it’s inspiring!”

There’s no time like the holidays to give to local schools, especially if you can track where your money is going and exactly who it is helping. Supporting education in our community is crucial to future growth. Can you think of a better way to ring in the New Year?
